Things Men Refuse To Consider As They Grow Older
There are a variety of things men refuse to consider as they grow older. Maybe this has something to do with the fact that the only thing that separates the men from the boys is the cost of their toys or maybe it’s some sort of primal instinct to stay ahead of the pack, who can say? Regardless, it would probably be a good idea for any man to sit down and take stock of his situation.
Remember; the word is ‘assess’ and not ‘obsess.’ Worrying endlessly about everything to do with growing older serves no good use in either the short or long runs. But, thinking about what it’s going to take to ensure a solid retirement income needs to be a part of any man’s plans for his life. Don’t be the grasshopper who got outworked by the ant, in other words.
It seems these days that no one — men especially — wants to concede to age. Men waxing their legs, chests and backs (especially their chests and backs) to hide gray hair coming in is a growing phenomenon. There’s nothing wrong with that (and it’s certainly better than taking some sort of shoe polish or dye and covering the gray), but it’s a good idea to plan for the future and not run from it.
There’s a lot to be said for looking at the 20s through 50s as a golden opportunity to amass a lot of gold, for lack of a better phrase. These are the most vigorous years in a person’s life and can also be the prime time when a great deal of money can be made. After all, who wants to be thinking about saving huge sums of money in their 60s in order to fund their lifestyle in their 70s?
It’s far better to put that money aside in the 40 years between starting one’s work life and reaching the age of 60, especially for men. So, rather than going out and spending big bucks on some sort of miracle anti aging eye cream, take that money and put it into an interest-bearing account and add the money that would’ve gone to buying that eye cream regularly into that account every month.
Soon enough, the miracle of compounding begins to pick up more and more vigor and speed. And what was once a couple of hundred dollars in an account at age 21 can be a huge sum of money in that same account at age 60, with just a small amount of money added to it each month. All the above is probably something most men refuse to consider, though, sad to say.
Perhaps considering something like what’s been discussed is in some way conceding that one will get old (though one never has to get ‘old, ‘ in all the ways that really matter) and perhaps it’s just a man’s way of refusing to confront the stubborn truth of things. We all have to age and it’s really what defines us as humans, but we have the advantage of being able to plan for it, so take heart in that.
